About this book

This volume reproduces the Introduction to Philosophy course, held by Mircea Florian at the University of Bucharest, Faculty of Philosophy and Letters between 1942-1944. In Mythos and Logos, the Romanian philosopher analyzes the concept of myth from the perspective of his realist-rationalist philosophy. Influenced by the work of the German philosopher W. Nestle, Vom Mythos zum Logos (1940), Mircea Florian wrote in this sense: "Myth and Logos are two permanent forms of speech or discourse, and as there is no word without a rudiment of abstraction, myth is not completely foreign to thought, even if we consider it more plastic, closer to the involuntary activity of the unconscious." The Romanian thinker enters into dialogue with the great theoreticians of myth: W. Wundt, Sigmund Freud, Émile Durkheim, Lévy-Brühl, Fr. Böhm, Ernest Cassirer, E. Bethe, G. Ferrero, R.R. Marett, Erich Unger, Lucian Blaga. Mircea Florian was, in Romanian philosophy between the two world wars, the model par excellence of the philosophy teacher concerned with the most thorough exposition of philosophy. The publication of this course, unprecedented until now, concludes the philosophical trilogy taught by Mircea Florian at the University of Bucharest: Introduction to Philosophy (1942-1944), General Philosophy (1946-1947), Philosophy of History (1947-1948).
