"The best [book] that exists on Romanian literature." Lucian Blaga "Modern spirit, permeable to all confrontations of ideas, to all aesthetic experiences, Basil Munteanu achieves [in Panorama de la littérature roumaine] a living synthesis of everything that meant Romanian literature up to that date. [...] We can say that Romanian literature could, finally, be known abroad in its true light." Virgil Ierunca (re)brings to the attention of knowledgeable Romanian readers/fans of Romanian literature a "history" of this literature published in 1938(!) we consider to be an act of restitutio, but also one of justice, not only of necessity. And this because "the one who cries out, uribi et orbi, the European vocation of the Romanians and their right to be taken into account in Western culture, does not have, in his country, the recognition and memory that he deserves," as Alexandru Niculescu drew attention. The re-editing of his masterpiece and, why not, the translation and publication of other volumes (unknown to the Romanian reader) could bring, we think, (re)recognition commensurate with his size as a Romanian and European scholar at the same time.
