The story of "I don't know" alternates the register of the reality of the Romanian village, the world of the peasants with their typical humanity, confronting fatality with humor, with that of the supernatural, the idealized universe populated by fantastic beings that change the hero's destiny. The main character, the orphan boy, unprepared for confrontations with the laws of reality because of his strange innocence, about which we do not know if it is natural or a metaphor for insight, is a hero that can be placed, from the perspective of the characterization of Romanian stories, between Păcală and Harap-Alb.
