About this book

The present work, Philosophy and the spirit of science, continues the series of unpublished manuscripts left by the philosopher Mihai Uţă (1902-1964), in the family archive. The author is part of the line of Romanian philosophers of realist-rationalist orientation from the interwar period (Mircea Florian, D. D. Roşca, I. Brucăr, N. Bagdasar), philosophers who put reason above all as a method of knowledge, demanding consciousness to externalize itself, to explore the world piece by piece. With the help of reason, the human spirit processes the knowledge acquired through experience, separates the relationships between them and condenses them into general formulas. Only through the logical activity of simplification and systematization, the knowledge acquired through experience, which, in the initial state is a simple conglomerate of sensations, turns into science. Philosophy and science consist of different knowledge: the first, from absolute knowledge, the second, from relative knowledge. The only one that can give an overview of the immediate world is metaphysics. "While science investigates particular events, metaphysics tries to know their foundations and essence. It does not deny science, on the contrary, it uses its results, but it has the courage to go beyond science, to bring news from the world that science has not penetrated." Science, the Romanian philosopher is convinced, will remain, whenever and wherever, what it is: "a quantitative conception of existence". Instead, philosophy, even when it rises to the idea of creative divinity, puts divine actions in harmony with the laws of the universe established by science. Adrian Michiduţă
