About this book

The volume Logica lui Dimitrie Cantemir was edited by the philosopher Iosif Brucăr between 1951-1953, in Bucharest. At the beginning of the 50s, acad. BUT. Gulian, the director of the Institute of Philosophy at that time, asked Dan Bădărău and Iosif Brucăr to elaborate a work dedicated to the philosophy and logic of the Moldavian voivode. Dan Bădărău dealt with the Philosophy of D. Cantemir, and I. Brucăr with the Logic of D. Cantemir. If the work of D. Bădărău was published in 1964, that of I. Brucăr remained in manuscript for 62 years. In Little compendium on the entire teaching of logic (1701), D. Cantemir summarizes the knowledge he acquired during his education during the period when he was Ieremia Cacavela's student. D. Cantemir divides logic into two parts: natural logic and artificial logic. Natural logic is spontaneous thinking in which ideas chain together, without the thinker being aware of the rules his thinking follows. The second, artificial logic, is a systematic exposition of the rules of correct thinking established by Aristotle. The logician Dimitrie Cantemir used, as well noted by I. Brucăr, in Compendiolum universae logices institutiones "a number of treatises, compendia and commentaries, some of which became classics at the time, others less known. He filtered everything through the thick sieve of common sense and criticism, keeping only what was according to his philosophical conception". After D. Cantemir, Alexandru Aman is the second Romanian to write his own work on logic, Logica judiciascea (1851). All other works of logic that appeared in the Romanian public space between the years 1701-1851 are translations from foreign authors. Adrian Michiduţă
