About this book

Most of us know that Lucreţiu Pătrășcanu (1900-1954) was a lawyer, a professor of theoretical economics at the Faculty of Law in Bucharest, a communist politician, Minister of Justice in the first government of General Constantin Sănătescu after August 23, 1944, but a philosopher, no! Yes, unfortunately! Pătrăşcanu was the first Marxist theoretician to subject Romanian philosophy to a "spectral analysis", in the work Currents and Tendencies in Romanian Philosophy, published in 1946. Minister Pătrăşcanu leaned on Romanian philosophical thinking, speaking from the seat of power he temporarily held. Therefore, it can be stated that what he wrote about Romanian philosophers (T. Maiorescu, C. Rădulescu‑Motru, P.P. Negulescu, Mircea Florian, I.D. Gherea, Lucian Blaga, Nae Ionescu, C. Noica, Emil Cioran, Vasile Băncilă, Al. Mironescu, Ernest Bernea, etc.) makes him responsible for the subsequent "purification" of them from Romanian culture. The wooden language in which the book was written, the truncations and interpretations taken out of context made the volume Currents and trends in Romanian philosophy to be, for many decades of communism, a kind of Procustian bed in which Romanian philosophy was buried. By writing this work dedicated to Romanian thought, Lucrețiu Pătrășcanu did no service to our culture. We can say that he set the tone for the Marxist, distorting and biased interpretations, which will be taken up, later, by the communist exegetes. Lucrețiu Pătrășcanu undertook the task of abolishing Romanian philosophy, therefore he can be considered its gravedigger. Adrian Michiduța
